Types of Solutions – Class 12 | Chapter – 2 | Chemistry Short Notes Series PDF for NEET & JEE

Types of Solutions: A solution is a homogeneous mixture of two or more substances. The solution consists of a solvent, which is the substance in greater amount, and a solute, which is the substance in smaller amount that dissolves in the solvent.

Types of Solutions

There are several types of solutions, including:

  • Homogeneous Solution: A homogeneous solution is a uniform mixture of two or more substances. In a homogeneous solution, the solute particles are distributed uniformly throughout the solvent. Examples include saltwater, sugar water, and air.
  • Heterogeneous Solution: A heterogeneous solution is a non-uniform mixture of two or more substances. In a heterogeneous solution, the solute particles are not distributed uniformly throughout the solvent. Examples include oil and water, sand and water, and milk.
  • Saturated Solution: A saturated solution is a solution in which no more solute can be dissolved in the solvent at a given temperature and pressure. Any additional solute added to a saturated solution will not dissolve.
  • Unsaturated Solution: An unsaturated solution is a solution in which more solute can be dissolved in the solvent at a given temperature and pressure. Any additional solute added to an unsaturated solution will dissolve.
  • Supersaturated Solution: A supersaturated solution is a solution in which more solute has been dissolved than is normally possible at a given temperature and pressure. Supersaturated solutions are unstable and can be formed by dissolving solute in a hot solvent and allowing it to cool slowly.
  • Dilute Solution: A dilute solution is a solution that contains a small amount of solute relative to the solvent.
  • Concentrated Solution: A concentrated solution is a solution that contains a large amount of solute relative to the solvent.
