Magnetic Properties – Class 12 | Chapter – 1 | Chemistry Short Notes Series PDF for NEET & JEE
Magnetic Properties: Magnetic properties refer to the behavior of a material in the presence of a magnetic field. The magnetic properties of a material depend on its composition, crystal structure, and temperature. Understanding magnetic properties is important for the development of magnetic materials and devices such as hard drives, magnetic sensors, and MRI machines.
Types of Magnetic Properties
The magnetic properties of materials can be categorized into three main types: diamagnetic, paramagnetic, and ferromagnetic.
- Diamagnetism: Diamagnetic materials are those that do not have any unpaired electrons in their atoms, which means they have no permanent magnetic moment. When placed in an external magnetic field, diamagnetic materials experience a weak magnetic repulsion, causing them to move slightly away from the field.
- Paramagnetism: Paramagnetic materials have unpaired electrons in their atoms, resulting in a net magnetic moment. When placed in an external magnetic field, paramagnetic materials experience a weak magnetic attraction, causing them to move slightly towards the field.
- Ferromagnetism: Ferromagnetic materials have a permanent magnetic moment and can be magnetized by an external magnetic field. They are made up of small magnetic domains, each of which has its own magnetic moment. When an external magnetic field is applied, these domains align themselves in the direction of the field, resulting in a net magnetic moment.
