Expressing Concentration of Solutions: The concentration of a solution refers to the amount of solute (the substance being dissolved) present in a given amount of solvent (the substance doing the dissolving).
Ways Expressing Concentration of Solutions
There are several ways to express the concentration of a solution, including:
- Molarity (M): Molarity is defined as the number of moles of solute per liter of solution. It is expressed in units of mol/L.
- Molality (m): Molality is defined as the number of moles of solute per kilogram of solvent. It is expressed in units of mol/kg.
- Mass percent (%): Mass percent is defined as the mass of solute per 100 grams of solution. It is expressed as a percentage.
- Parts per million (ppm): Parts per million is defined as the number of parts of solute per million parts of solution. It is often used for very dilute solutions.
- Volume percent (% v/v): Volume percent is defined as the volume of solute per 100 volumes of solution. It is often used for solutions of liquids in liquids.
