Unit of Volume- Class 11 | Chapter – 2 | Physics Short Notes Series PDF for NEET & JEE
Unit of Volume: Volume is a measure of the amount of space occupied by an object or a substance. It is a derived physical quantity that is calculated by multiplying length, width, and height of the object or substance.
SI Unit of Volume
The unit of volume depends on the system of measurement being used. In the International System of Units (SI), the unit of volume is cubic meter (m³). However, for most practical purposes, smaller units of volume are used.
In SI, the commonly used smaller units of volume are cubic centimeter (cm³), cubic millimeter (mm³), and liter (L). One liter is equal to one cubic decimeter (dm³) and is approximately equal to 0.264 gallons.
In the United States customary system of measurement, the commonly used units of volume are fluid ounce (fl oz), pint (pt), quart (qt), and gallon (gal). One gallon is equal to 128 fluid ounces, four quarts, or eight pints.
cubic kilometer | km3 | 1,000,000,000 m3 |
hectometer cubic | hm3 | 1,000,000m3 |
decameter cubic | dam3 | 1,000 m3 |
cubic meter | m3 | 1 m3 |
cubic decimeter | dm3 | 0.001 m3 |
cubic centimeter | cm3 | 0.000001 m3 |
cubic millimeter | mm3 | 0.000000001 m3 |
SI Unit of Volume of a Liquid
The SI unit for the volume of a liquid is cubic meter (m³). However, this is not a practical unit for most applications involving liquids. Therefore, smaller units such as cubic centimeter (cm³) and milliliter (mL) are commonly used.
1 cm³ is equal to 1 milliliter (mL). Thus, 1 mL is also considered as a practical SI unit for the volume of a liquid. Other common units of liquid volume in the SI system include microliter (μL) and kiloliter (kL).
The conversion factors between these units are:
- 1 mL = 1 cm³
- 1 μL = 0.001 mL
- 1 kL = 1,000 L = 1,000,000 mL = 1,000,000 cm³

Converting Unit of Volume
To convert between different units of volume, you need to know the conversion factor between the units. Here are some common conversion factors for volume:
- 1 milliliter (mL) = 1 cubic centimeter (cm³)
- 1 liter (L) = 1,000 milliliters (mL) = 1,000 cubic centimeters (cm³)
- 1 cubic meter (m³) = 1,000,000 cubic centimeters (cm³) = 1,000 liters (L)
To convert from a larger unit to a smaller unit, multiply the value by the conversion factor. For example, to convert 2 liters (L) to milliliters (mL), you would multiply 2 by 1,000, which gives you 2,000 mL.
To convert from a smaller unit to a larger unit, divide the value by the conversion factor. For example, to convert 500 milliliters (mL) to liters (L), you would divide 500 by 1,000, which gives you 0.5 L.
It’s important to use the appropriate unit of volume depending on the application. For example, you might use milliliters (mL) or liters (L) when measuring the volume of a liquid, while you might use cubic centimeters (cm³) when measuring the volume of a solid object.
