Diseases Caused by Fungi – Class 12 | Chapter – 8 | Biology Short Notes Series PDF

Diseases Caused by Fungi: Fungi are a diverse group of organisms that belong to the kingdom Fungi. They are not plants, animals, or bacteria, but have their own unique characteristics. Fungi play important roles in the environment, including breaking down dead plant and animal material, and in the food industry, where they are used in the production of various fermented products, such as bread, cheese, and beer.

However, some fungi can cause diseases in humans, animals, and plants. Examples of fungal diseases in humans include ringworm, athlete’s foot, thrush, aspergillosis, and histoplasmosis, among others. Fungal diseases can affect different parts of the body, including the skin, nails, and lungs, and can range from mild to severe, depending on the type of fungus and the immune status of the host. Treatment for fungal diseases usually involves antifungal medications, either taken orally or applied topically.

Diseases Caused by Fungi

Fungi can cause a variety of diseases in humans, including:

  • Athlete’s foot: a fungal infection of the skin on the feet, caused by various species of fungi.
  • Thrush: an oral yeast infection caused by the fungus Candida albicans.
  • Aspergillosis: a group of diseases caused by the fungus Aspergillus, which can affect the lungs, sinuses, and other parts of the body.
  • Histoplasmosis: a fungal infection caused by the fungus Histoplasma capsulatum, which can affect the lungs and other organs.
  • Cryptococcosis: a fungal infection caused by Cryptococcus neoformans, which primarily affects the lungs and central nervous system.
  • Coccidioidomycosis (valley fever): a fungal infection caused by Coccidioides immitis and Coccidioides posadasii, which primarily affects the lungs.
  • Pneumocystis pneumonia: a fungal infection caused by Pneumocystis jirovecii, which primarily affects individuals with weakened immune systems.
