Ovary – Class 12 | Chapter – 3 | Biology Short Notes Series PDF

Ovary: They are small, oval-shaped glands located on either side of your uterus. They produce and store eggs (also called ovum) and make hormones that control your menstrual cycle and pregnancy. During ovulation, one of ovaries releases an egg. Ovaries continue to release an egg each menstrual cycle until the menopause. During menopause, ovaries stop releasing eggs. Sometimes your ovaries can release more than one egg (this can result in a multiple pregnancy). You are born with all the eggs you will ever have in your lifetime.

Parts of Ovary

  • Medulla: It is also known as the zona vasculosa, is the deeper core region of the ovary.
  • Cortex: The cortex is the wider outer section with dense cellular layers. It is broken at the hilum, where the medulla joins the mesovarium.

Function of Ovary

  1. Ovary stores the produced eggs in it and later releases an egg during ovulation.
  2. Ovary acts as an endocrine gland and produces hormones that control the menstrual cycle and pregnancy.
  3. The main function of the ovary is to produce the ovum and secrete female sex hormones.
