Uses of Contraceptives: Contraception is an artificial method or technique, mainly used to prevent pregnancy as a consequence of sexual intercourse. When a sperm reaches the ova in a woman, she may become pregnant.

Uses of Contraceptives

  1. The primary need for contraception is to control the growing population. Contraceptive methods prevent unwanted pregnancies in females and control the birth rate.
  2. Family planning that controls the size of the family requires the use of contraceptive methods.
  3. Some contraceptive methods also prevent the spread of sexually transmitted diseases.

Methods of contraception

  1. Natural methods:
  • Example – Coitus interrupts or withdrawal

2. Barriers:

  • Example – Condoms

3. Intra-uterine devices (IUDs):

  • Examples – Non-medicated IUDs and copper releasing IUDs,

4. Oral contraceptives:

  • Oral administration of progestogens or progestogen–estrogen combos in tiny dosages as a tablet or pill.

5. Injectables:

  • Females can also use progestogens alone or in combination with estrogen as injections

6. Implants:

  • Females can also use progestogens alone or in combination with estrogen as implants on skin.

7. Surgical methods:

  • Vasectomy in males.
  • Tubectomy in females.
