Uses of Contraceptives: Contraception is an artificial method or technique, mainly used to prevent pregnancy as a consequence of sexual intercourse. When a sperm reaches the ova in a woman, she may become pregnant.
Uses of Contraceptives
- The primary need for contraception is to control the growing population. Contraceptive methods prevent unwanted pregnancies in females and control the birth rate.
- Family planning that controls the size of the family requires the use of contraceptive methods.
- Some contraceptive methods also prevent the spread of sexually transmitted diseases.
Methods of contraception
- Natural methods:
- Example – Coitus interrupts or withdrawal
2. Barriers:
- Example – Condoms
3. Intra-uterine devices (IUDs):
- Examples – Non-medicated IUDs and copper releasing IUDs,
4. Oral contraceptives:
- Oral administration of progestogens or progestogen–estrogen combos in tiny dosages as a tablet or pill.
5. Injectables:
- Females can also use progestogens alone or in combination with estrogen as injections
6. Implants:
- Females can also use progestogens alone or in combination with estrogen as implants on skin.
7. Surgical methods:
- Vasectomy in males.
- Tubectomy in females.
