Types of Sentences Notes – English Grammar Notes PDF for Academic and Competitive Exams

Types of Sentences Notes: Sentences are the building blocks of communication in any language. They are used to convey thoughts, feelings, and ideas. A sentence is defined as a group of words that expresses a complete thought. There are four main types of sentences in English: declarative, interrogative, imperative, and exclamatory. Each type serves a different purpose in communication. In this blog, we will explore each type of sentence with examples.

Types of Sentences

Types of Sentences are:

  1. Declarative Sentences: A declarative sentence makes a statement and ends with a period. These sentences are used to convey information or express an opinion. Examples:
  • The sky is blue.
  • She is a doctor.
  • They are going to the beach.
  1. Interrogative Sentences: An interrogative sentence is used to ask a question and ends with a question mark. Examples:
  • Did you finish your homework?
  • Where is the nearest gas station?
  • What time is the movie starting?
  1. Imperative Sentences: An imperative sentence is used to give a command, make a request, or give advice. It ends with a period or an exclamation mark. Examples:
  • Close the door, please.
  • Study hard for your exam.
  • Let’s go to the park.
  1. Exclamatory Sentences: An exclamatory sentence expresses strong emotions or feelings and ends with an exclamation mark. Examples:
  • What a beautiful day it is!
  • I can’t believe we won the game!
  • How delicious this food tastes!

In addition to the four main types of sentences, there are also compound sentences, complex sentences, and compound-complex sentences. These types of sentences are formed by combining different clauses, phrases, or parts of speech to express more complex thoughts and ideas.

  1. Compound Sentences: A compound sentence is made up of two or more independent clauses joined together by a coordinating conjunction. Examples:
  • She likes to dance, but he prefers to sing.
  • The cat is sleeping, and the dog is barking.
  1. Complex Sentences: A complex sentence is made up of an independent clause and one or more dependent clauses joined together by a subordinating conjunction. Examples:

  • She will go to the party if she finishes her work on time.
  1. Compound-Complex Sentences: A compound-complex sentence is made up of two or more independent clauses and one or more dependent clauses. Examples:
  • After we finished dinner, we watched a movie, and then we went to bed.
  • She likes to read books, but she also enjoys watching movies when she has free time.
