Pineal Gland – Class 11 | Chapter – 22 | Biology Short Notes Series PDF

Pineal Gland: The pineal gland is a part of the human body, especially the human brain. It is located in the middle of the human brain, in between the two hemispheres of the human body. It produces melatonin in the human brain and it is responsible for the human body’s circadian system. In adults, the pineal gland is 5 to 9 mm in size and 0.1 gram in weight.

Functions of Pineal Gland

The pineal glands play an important role in the female hormone levels. Also it affects the women’s fertility and menstrual cycle in the women because of the large amount of melatonin produced in the brain. Basically, the Pineal gland is made up of neuroglial cells, portions of neurons, and cells. This architecture is also called pinealocytes. There are mainly pineal gland functions in the human body. Which are mentioned below.

  • Reduced cancer risk

According to the researchers and scientists there is a huge interconnection between the cancer risk and the pineal gland. And it plays a significant role in reducing cancer risks. Melatonin is the most useful chemical which is produced by the pineal gland used to reduce the cancer risks.

  • Mood Stabilization

Basically, Mood stabilization depends on the size of the pineal gland. Because if the pineal gland size increases then it releases more melatonin caffeine and the more melatonin produced the more time the mood will stabilize.

  • Reproductive systems in female hormones

Due to melatonin, there are hormones produced in the females which are useful in the reproduction systems especially in the females.

  • Cardiovascular issues

The production of melatonin creates a positive impact on the heart and also on the blood vessels. And it is also useful in heart-related diseases.

Disorders of Pineal Gland

Listed below are few disorders caused by the malfunctioning of the pineal gland.

  1. Depression.
  2. Mood swings.
  3. Peptic or stomach ulcers.
  4. Disruption in sleep patterns.
  5. An impaired pineal gland leads to hormonal imbalance.
  6. Sexual disorders are caused by the dysfunctioning of the pineal gland.
