Stages in the life cycle of Plasmodium – Class 12 | Chapter – 8 | Biology Short Notes Series PDF

Stages in the life cycle of Plasmodium: Plasmodium enters the human body as small sporozoites through the bite of infected female anopheles mosquito and multiplies within the lever cells. Later attacks the RBCs resulting the rapture with release of toxic substance, haemozoin, which is responsible for high fever and chill recurring every three to four days.

Life Cycle of Plasmodium

  • Sporozoites of Plasmodium enter the human body through the bite of infected female Anopheles mosquito.
  • After entering the human body, the sporozoites multiply in the liver cells. After that, they attack the red blood cells (RBCs); resulting in their rupture.
  • The rupture of RBCs is associated with release of a toxic substance called haemozoin. This toxic substance causes chill and high fever; which recur every three to four days.
  • When the female Anopheles mosquito bites an infected person, the malaria parasite enters the mosquito’s body and undergoes further development.
  • The parasite multiplies within the mosquito’s body to form sporozoites. The sporozoites are stored the in salivary glands of mosquito.
