Segmentation is the division of an animal into similar parts. It provides a simple way of enlarging the animal by duplicating a segment many times to make up entire organism without any alterations. Segmentation is observed in all the larger fauna – from insects and earthworms to vertebrates.

In some animals, the body is externally and internally divided into segments with a serial repetition of at least some organs. For example, in earthworm, the body shows this pattern called metameric segmentation and the phenomenon is known as metamerism.
