Relation between Field and Potential: The electric field and electric potential are two different ways of representing the same physical quantity, the electric field. The electric potential provides a convenient way of calculating the energy stored in an electric field, while the electric field provides a convenient way of calculating the force experienced by a charged particle in an electric field.
Relation between Field and Potential
In general, the electric field and electric potential can be calculated from the distribution and arrangement of the charges in a system. The electric field and electric potential are useful for understanding the behavior of electrically charged particles in electric and magnetic fields and for calculating the energy stored in an electric field.
The electric field and electric potential are related through the following equation:
E = – dV / dx
Where,
E is the Electric field.
V is the electric potential.
dx is the path length.
– sign indicates that the electric field is directed from higher potential to lower potential.
The equation states that the electric field is proportional to the negative gradient of the electric potential. This means that the electric field is in the direction of the steepest decrease in the electric potential, and its magnitude is proportional to the rate of change of the electric potential in that direction.
