The rate expression for a chemical reaction is an equation that relates the rate of the reaction to the concentrations of the reactants and any catalysts or inhibitors present. It is also known as the rate law or rate equation.

The general form of the rate expression for a chemical reaction involving reactants A and B is:

Rate = k [A]^m [B]ⁿ

Where:

• Rate is the rate of the reaction
• k is the rate constant, which is specific to the reaction and depends on the temperature, pressure, and presence of catalysts or inhibitors
• [A] and [B] are the concentrations of the reactants
• m and n are the reaction orders with respect to A and B, respectively, and indicate how the rate of the reaction depends on the concentration of each reactant

The rate constant (k) is a proportionality constant that relates the rate of the reaction to the concentrations of the reactants. It is experimentally determined for each reaction and is specific to the temperature, pressure, and presence of catalysts or inhibitors.

The units of the rate constant depend on the overall order of the reaction. For example, for a first-order reaction, the units of the rate constant are s^-1. For a second-order reaction, the units are M^-1s^-1, and for a third-order reaction, the units are M^-2s^-1.
