A [Uttarakhand]
Notes: A massive avalanche has recently occurred in the Kedar Peak area of Chorabari glacial lake region, near Kedarnath shrine in Uttarakhand. As per the authorities, no increase in the water level was observed in the Saraswati River. It is a tributary of Mandakini River that flows through the Kedarnath shrine. An avalanche was reported in the same region last month.

B [Kerala]
Notes: Allmania multiflora, a new plant species has been spotted on the granite hillocks of Palakkad, Kerala. It is a new plant species of the genus Allmania. Allmania multiflora is only the second species of this genus identified so far. It is an annual herb that grows to a height of about 60 cm. The genus and the first species were described by botanists 188 years.

Notes: The 27th annual UN meeting on climate, COP27 (Conference of Parties) will take place in Sharm-el-Sheikh, Egypt from 6th to 18th November. This will be the fifth time a Climate Conference is being hosted in Africa. COP27 will focus on three main areas, reducing emissions, helping countries to prepare and deal with climate change and securing technical support and funding for developing countries for climate activities.

D [Uttar Pradesh]
Notes: The Union Ministry of Environment, forest, and climate change (MoEFCC) has approved to set up Terai Elephant Reserve (TER) in Lakhimpur Kheri district of Uttar Pradesh. The Terai Elephant Reserve (TER) would be the 33rd in the country and second in Uttar Pradesh. The first elephant reserve in Uttar Pradesh was notified in Shivalik in Saharanpur and Bijnor districts in 2009.

Notes: Indian Agriculture Research Institute has successfully tested two new dwarf varieties: Pusa Narendra Kalanamak 1638 and Pusa Narendra Kalanamak 1652, in Uttar Pradesh. Kalanamak, a traditional variety of paddy with a black husk and a strong fragrance. It is considered a gift from Lord Buddha to the people of the Sravasti. It is grown in 11 districts of the Terai region of Uttar Pradesh and in Nepal. The crop was affected by ‘lodging’ condition, while the new dwarf variety seeks to give double the yield.

Uttar Pradesh’s Ranipur Tiger Reserve has become the 53rd tiger reserve of India. The tiger reserve is spread across over 529.36 sq km.
It is also the fourth tiger reserve in Uttar Pradesh and the three other tiger reserves being Dudhwa, Pilibhit and Amangarh. Ranipur tiger reserve is covered by northern tropical dry deciduous forests and is home to mammals like megafauna tiger, leopard, bear, spotted deer, sambhar, chinkara among others.

B [Nagaland]

Nagaland is hosting the first edition of the Tokhü Emong Bird Count (TEBC), a documentation event to list birds in the state.
This event is being organised in collaboration with the Wokha Forest Division, Nagaland Forest Management Project (NFMP) and Bird Count India. The event is being held during the Tokhü Emong post-harvest festival of the Lotha Nagas to spread awareness about Nagaland’s bird diversity.

B [Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change]
Notes:
The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has recently notified E-waste (management) rules 2022.
The rules will come into force from 1 April next year and apply to every manufacturer, producer refurbisher and recycler. The rules mandate to reduce the use of lead, mercury, cadmium among others in the manufacturing of electronic equipment.

India communicated strong objections to discussions under a special UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) effort known as the Koronivia Joint Work on Agriculture.
The Joint work has sought to expand efforts to reduce emissions of greenhouses gases to the agriculture sector. The draft decision under the Koronivia Joint Work mentions mitigation or the efforts to reduce emissions, multiple times.

The 19th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties (CoP 19) to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) is being held at Panama City.
India’s proposal for induction of fresh water turtle ‘Batagur kachuga’ earned support of the parties in CoP 19 of CITES. CITES also lauded the result achieved by the country in operations initiated by the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau namely Operation Turtshield, to eliminate poaching and illegal trade of fresh water turtles.
