Notions of Work – Class 11 | Chapter – 6 | Physics Short Notes Series PDF for NEET & JEE

Notions of Work: Work is defined as the product of the force applied to an object and the distance over which that force is applied. Work is a scalar quantity and is measured in joules (J). Work is done on an object when a force is applied to it and causes it to move.

Notions of Work

There are a few key notions of work that are important to understand:

  • Positive work: Positive work is done when the force applied to an object is in the same direction as the displacement of the object. In other words, when the object moves in the direction of the force applied, positive work is done.
  • Negative work: Negative work is done when the force applied to an object is in the opposite direction to the displacement of the object. In this case, the object loses energy as it moves against the force applied to it.
  • Zero work: Zero work is done when the force applied to an object is perpendicular to the displacement of the object. In this case, the force does not contribute to the work done on the object.
  • Net work: Net work is the total work done on an object by all the forces acting on it. It is calculated as the sum of the work done by each individual force.
