Lymphoid Organs – Class 12 | Chapter – 8 | Biology Short Notes Series PDF

Lymphoid Organs: The main function of lymphoid organ is to trap the germs or microbes entering the body and elicit an immune response against them.

Classification of Lymphoid Organs

  • On the basis of roles played by the organs in the development of the immune system or to trigger a response, there are two kinds of organs:
    • Primary Lymphoid Organ
    • Secondary Lymphoid Organ
  • On the basis of location, lymphoid organs are of two kinds:
    • Internal Lymphoid Organ
    • External Lymphoid Organ

Difference between Primary and Secondary Lymphoid Organs

Primary Lymphoid Organ

Secondary Lymphoid Organ

  • Organs of Immune System where Lymphocytes are made and mature.
  • Organs of Immune System which sustain mature naive Lymphocytes and begin an adaptive Immune response.
  • They let Lymphoid stem Cells to proliferate, differentiate and mature
  • They let Lymphoid Cells to become functional
  • These Organs contain either T-Cells or B-Cells
  • These Organs contain both T-Cells and B-Cells
  • They have no contact with antigens
  • They have contact with antigens
  • These Organs undergo atrophy with age
  • These Organs increase in size with age
