Endometrium – Class 12 | Chapter – 3 | Biology Short Notes Series PDF

Endometrium: It is the tissue that lines the uterus, or womb the pear-shaped organ that houses a fetus. This mucous membrane thickens in anticipation of a possible pregnancy. If a fertilized egg is implanted, the lining stays in place. If not, it thins and sheds as a menstrual period.

Layers of Endometrium

  • Stratum basalis of the basal layer, and stratum functionalis or the functional layer.
  • Adjacent to the myometrium, the stratum basalis is present. It does not get shed during menstruation, and further forms stratum functionalis.
  • Adjacent to the uterine cavity, the stratum functionalis is present. It gets shed during menstruation.

Role of endometrium in Pregnancy

  • The inner lining of the uterus is called the endometrium.
  • It is the place where the blastocyst is implanted.
  • It supports fetal growth by providing oxygen and nutrients.
  • Uterine endometrium (uterine lining) is preparation for implantation, maintenance of pregnancy if implantation occurs, and menstruation in the absence of pregnancy.
  • It plays a pivotal role in the reproduction and continuation of our species.
  • It protects the embryo and the fetus from microbial invasion during pregnancy.
  • At the time of conception occurs, the embryo is implanted in it.
