Endometrium – Class 12 | Chapter – 3 | Biology Short Notes Series PDF
Endometrium: It is the tissue that lines the uterus, or womb the pear-shaped organ that houses a fetus. This mucous membrane thickens in anticipation of a possible pregnancy. If a fertilized egg is implanted, the lining stays in place. If not, it thins and sheds as a menstrual period.
Layers of Endometrium
- Stratum basalis of the basal layer, and stratum functionalis or the functional layer.
- Adjacent to the myometrium, the stratum basalis is present. It does not get shed during menstruation, and further forms stratum functionalis.
- Adjacent to the uterine cavity, the stratum functionalis is present. It gets shed during menstruation.
Role of endometrium in Pregnancy
- The inner lining of the uterus is called the endometrium.
- It is the place where the blastocyst is implanted.
- It supports fetal growth by providing oxygen and nutrients.
- Uterine endometrium (uterine lining) is preparation for implantation, maintenance of pregnancy if implantation occurs, and menstruation in the absence of pregnancy.
- It plays a pivotal role in the reproduction and continuation of our species.
- It protects the embryo and the fetus from microbial invasion during pregnancy.
- At the time of conception occurs, the embryo is implanted in it.
