Electrical Properties – Class 12 | Chapter – 1 | Chemistry Short Notes Series PDF for NEET & JEE

Electrical Properties: Electrical properties refer to the physical characteristics of a material that determine its ability to conduct or resist the flow of electricity. Electrical properties are important for a wide range of technological applications, from electronic devices to energy storage systems.

Electrical Properties

Some key electrical properties of materials include:

  • Conductivity: the ability of a material to conduct electricity, which is measured in units of siemens per meter (S/m) or ohms per meter (Ω/m).
  • Resistivity: the inverse of conductivity, which is the measure of a material’s ability to resist the flow of electrical current.
  • Dielectric constant or permittivity: the ability of a material to store electrical energy in an electric field.
  • Bandgap: the energy difference between the valence band and conduction band of a material, which determines its electrical conductivity and optical properties.
  • Carrier mobility: the speed and efficiency with which charge carriers move through a material under the influence of an electric field.
