Combination of Resistors – Class 12 | Chapter – 3 | Physics Short Notes Series PDF for NEET & JEE

Combination of Resistors: In electrical engineering, the combination of resistors refers to connecting two or more resistors in a circuit to produce a desired electrical behavior. There are several ways to connect resistors, each of which has its own unique properties and applications. Each type of resistor combination has its own unique electrical properties, such as the total resistance, current division, voltage division, and power dissipation. Understanding how resistors are combined in a circuit is important for designing and analyzing electrical systems and components, and for ensuring that they operate correctly and safely.

Ways in Combination of Resistors

The most common ways to connect resistors are:

  • Series connection: In a series connection, resistors are connected end to end so that the current flows through one resistor and then the next. The total resistance of the circuit is equal to the sum of the individual resistances.
  • Parallel connection: In a parallel connection, resistors are connected side by side so that the same voltage is applied across each resistor. The total resistance of the circuit is equal to the reciprocal of the sum of the reciprocals of the individual resistances.
  • Series-parallel combination: In a series-parallel combination, resistors are connected in a combination of series and parallel connections. This type of connection is often used in more complex electrical circuits to achieve a desired electrical behavior.

Colour Coding in Combination of Resistors

Resistors may not display the value outside but their resistance can be calculated through their colour pattern PTH (plated-through-hole) resistors use a colour-coding system (which really adds some flair to circuits), and SMD (surface-mount-device)resistors have their own value-marking system.

Following is a table with colour code of resistors:

Colour Colour code
Black 0
Brown 1
Red 2
Orange 3
Yellow 4
Green 5
Blue 6
Violet 7
Grey 8
White 9

Tolerance in Combination of Resistors

Following is a table with tolerance of resistor:

Colour   Tolerance
Brown ±1%
Red ±2%
Gold ±5%
Silver ±10%
