Combination of Capacitors – Class 12 | Chapter – 2 | Physics Short Notes Series PDF for NEET & JEE

Combination of Capacitors: Capacitors combination can be made in many ways. The combination is connected to a battery to apply a potential difference (V) and charge the plates (Q). We can define the equivalent capacitance of the combination between two points to be “C = Q/V”.

Methods of Combination of Capacitors

Capacitors can be combined in various ways to create different electrical circuits. The two most common ways of combining capacitors are in series and in parallel.

  • Capacitors in series: When capacitors are connected in series, the total capacitance of the circuit is less than the capacitance of the individual capacitors. The total capacitance of the series combination is given by the reciprocal of the sum of the reciprocals of the individual capacitances.

C_total = 1 / (1/C1 + 1/C2 + … + 1/Cn)

  • Capacitors in parallel: When capacitors are connected in parallel, the total capacitance of the circuit is equal to the sum of the capacitances of the individual capacitors. The total capacitance of the parallel combination is given by:

C_total = C1 + C2 + … + Cn
