Average Velocity and Speed: Average velocity and speed are concepts used in physics to describe the motion of an object over a certain period of time.

Average velocity is the displacement of an object over a certain period of time, divided by the time taken to cover that distance. It is a vector quantity and includes information about the direction of motion. Mathematically, it can be expressed as:

average velocity = displacement / time

where displacement is the change in position of the object during the time interval, and time is the duration of the interval.

For example, if a car travels a distance of 120 kilometers to the east in 2 hours, then its average velocity is:

average velocity = displacement / time = 120 km east / 2 hours = 60 km/hour east

Therefore, the car’s average velocity is 60 kilometers per hour to the east.

Average speed, on the other hand, is the total distance traveled by an object over a certain period of time, divided by the time taken to cover that distance. It is a scalar quantity and does not include information about the direction of motion. Mathematically, it can be expressed as:

average speed = distance traveled / time

where distance traveled is the total distance covered by the object during the time interval, and time is the duration of the interval.

For example, if a car travels a distance of 120 kilometers in 2 hours, then its average speed is:

average speed = distance traveled / time = 120 km / 2 hours = 60 km/hour

Therefore, the car’s average speed is 60 kilometers per hour.

Difference between Average Velocity and Speed

The key difference between average velocity and average speed is that average velocity is a vector quantity, whereas average speed is a scalar quantity.

Average velocity takes into account both the magnitude and direction of an object’s displacement over a certain period of time. It is calculated by dividing the displacement of the object by the time taken to cover that displacement. Since it is a vector quantity, it has both magnitude and direction.

Average speed, on the other hand, is simply the total distance traveled by an object over a certain period of time, divided by the time taken to cover that distance. It is a scalar quantity that only describes the magnitude of an object’s motion, regardless of its direction.
