Agrochemicals and its importance in Agriculture – Class 12 | Chapter – 12 | Biology Short Notes Series PDF

Agrochemicals: Agrochemicals are chemical substances used in agriculture to control pests, weeds, and diseases. They include synthetic pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, and fertilizers. Conventional agriculture heavily relies on the use of agrochemicals to increase yields and protect crops, but they can have negative impacts on the environment, human health, and non-target species.

Some of the potential negative effects include soil and water pollution, harm to beneficial insects and pollinators, and food safety concerns. Overuse or improper use of agrochemicals can also lead to the development of pest and weed populations that are resistant to the chemicals, making future control efforts more difficult.

Types of Agrochemicals

These are chemical substances used in agriculture to enhance crop growth and protect crops from pests and diseases. Some common types are:

  • Pesticides: used to control pests and diseases in crops.
  • Fungicides: used to control fungal diseases in crops.
  • Herbicides: used to control weeds in crops.
  • Insecticides: used to control insect pests in crops.
  • Nematicides: used to control nematode pests in crops.
  • Fertilizers: used to supply essential nutrients to crops and improve soil fertility.
  • Plant growth regulators: used to control plant growth and development.

Benifits of Agrochemicals

  • Increased crop yields: By controlling pests and diseases and improving soil fertility, it can help increase crop yields and improve overall agricultural productivity.

  • Improved food quality: It can help produce crops with better appearance, longer shelf life, and improved nutritional value.
  • Lower costs: By reducing crop loss to pests and diseases, agrochemicals can help reduce costs for farmers and increase their profits.
  • Improved sustainability: By increasing crop yields and reducing crop loss, agrochemicals can help promote sustainable agriculture and conserve natural resources.
  • Enhanced food security: By improving crop yields and food quality, agrochemicals can help enhance food security and reduce hunger and malnutrition in regions where food is scarce.

Demerits of Agrochemicals

  • Environmental pollution: Overuse or improper use can lead to soil, water, and air pollution, which can harm wildlife and ecosystems.
  • Human health hazards: Exposure to agrochemicals can cause health problems such as skin irritation, respiratory problems, and even cancer.
  • Pesticide resistance: Overuse of certain pesticides can lead to the development of pests that are resistant to these chemicals, making it more difficult to control them in the future.
  • Negative impacts on non-target species: It can harm beneficial insects, birds, and other wildlife that are not the target of the chemicals.
  • Economic costs: The use can be expensive and can reduce profit margins for farmers.
  • Long-term soil degradation: Overuse of agro-chemicals can lead to soil degradation and decreased soil fertility, which can reduce crop yields and negatively impact agriculture in the long-term.
