Adjectives Notes – English Grammar Notes PDF for Academic and Competitive Exams

Adjectives Notes: Adjectives are words that describe or modify nouns or pronouns. They provide additional information about the quality, quantity, or state of the noun or pronoun they are modifying. Adjectives make the language more descriptive, allowing us to paint a clearer picture in the reader’s or listener’s mind.

Adjectives

There are two main types of adjectives: attributive and predicative.

Attributive adjectives are placed before the noun they modify, whereas predicative adjectives come after a linking verb and modify the subject of the sentence.

Examples of attributive adjectives:

  • The yellow sunflower
  • A big house
  • An expensive watch
  • My favorite book

Examples of predicative adjectives:

  • She looks happy.
  • The food smells delicious.
  • The flowers appear fresh.
  • The dress feels soft.

Adjectives can also be classified based on their degrees of comparison: positive, comparative, and superlative.

Positive adjectives simply describe a noun without making any comparison.

Example: The pizza was delicious.

Comparative adjectives are used to compare two nouns or pronouns. They are formed by adding -er to the end of the adjective or by placing more before the adjective.

Example: The pizza was tastier than the pasta.

Superlative adjectives are used to compare more than two nouns or pronouns. They are formed by adding -est to the end of the adjective or by placing most before the adjective.

Example: The pizza was the tastiest dish on the menu.

Adjectives can also be classified based on the quality they describe. Some of the most common categories of adjectives include:

  • Size: big, small, large, tiny, etc.
  • Color: red, blue, green, yellow, etc.
  • Shape: round, square, triangular, etc.
  • Age: young, old, new, ancient, etc.
  • Material: wooden, metallic, plastic, etc.
  • Origin: American, Italian, Japanese, etc.
  • Purpose: cooking, cleaning, etc.

Overall, adjectives are an essential part of English language that allow us to provide a more detailed and nuanced description of the world around us.
